In the Aegean region, at the crossroads between Europe and the Middle East, Pergamon was an important cultural, scientific and political center. Founded in the 3rd century BC as the capital of the Attalid dynasty, its monumental temples, theaters, porticoes, gymnasium, altar and library rose over sloping terrain enclosed by an extensive city wall. Its acropolis crowns a landscape bearing traces of the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires, above modern Bergama.
